Difficulty and fitness

Challenging

Mantalai is graded Challenging: a sustained multi-day trek gaining significant altitude with no pass crossing, making it a good step up for trekkers preparing for a full high-altitude expedition. Reasonable fitness and some prior trekking experience are recommended.

Experience needed. This is a challenging route. We will ask about your previous treks and fitness before confirming your place.

Altitude and safety

The highest point on this trek is about 14,100 ft. At this height many people feel the thinner air: headaches, poor sleep or loss of appetite are common early signs of altitude sickness. Drink water, walk at a steady pace and tell your trek leader straight away if you feel unwell. The usual first response to worsening symptoms is to stop climbing or descend.

Your trek leader or guide may change the plan, wait out bad weather or turn the group around if conditions or anyone's health make it unsafe to continue. Please tell us about any medical conditions or medication when you enquire, and carry a personal first-aid kit.

Best time for the Mantalai Trek

Best done June to September, when the trail is clear of heavy snow and the Parvati river crossings are manageable.

Mantalai Trek FAQs

Is Mantalai the same as Pin Parvati Pass?

No. Mantalai is the trek to the lake and back, while Pin Parvati Pass continues over the glacier into Spiti.

Is this a good preparation trek for Pin Parvati Pass?

Yes, many trekkers use Mantalai as a stepping stone before attempting the full crossing.

Are there river crossings?

Yes, the trail follows and crosses the Parvati river at several points, so trekking poles help.

Is prior trekking experience required?

Some prior trekking experience is recommended given the sustained altitude and duration.
